Faffy Martins Band
Brazil Jazz & MPB
Europe’s “funkiest” Brazilian rhythm section!
The top musicians in this band have been living in Switzerland since the 90s and touring Europe together. They could play together blindfold, and constantly challenge each other with their lively musical humour. Their interpretations sound new with every concert, but always come across as compact and easy to grasp. Anyone who’s seen them live knows how they pull people in.
Faffy Martins has been singing from the “Brazilian Songbook” for almost 20 years.
Her repertoire runs from bossa nova through MPB to Brazil Jazz, from Rosa Passos through Ellis Regina to Leny Andrade. She’s bringing together Switzerland’s best Brazilian musicians, infusing new life into the powerful and timeless songs from the Brazilian repertoire.
Her interpretations leave plenty of scope for the individual musicians, making every eye glisten and every foot tap. Faffy likes it funky!
Musica Popular Brasileira (MPB), bossa nova and Brazil Jazz
MPB is full of enchanting compositions that stay with you. Many of us know songs like “Desafinado” or “Flor de lis”. Their harmonic and rhythmic structures offer vast scope for jazz experimentation and interpretation.
The repertoire includes the best numbers by Elis Regina, Leny Andrade, Chico Buarque, João Bosco, Djavan, Jorge Ben, Sergio Mendes, Carlos Lyra, Ivan Lins, Tom Jobim, Toninho Horta and Rosa Passos.
Ademir Cândido, guitar,
played for years in Brazil with singers from the first and second generation of bossa nova, like Leny Andrade and Fafa de Belem. His jazzy phrasing makes him one of the busiest guitarists on the European Brazilian and jazz scene.
Dudu Penz, bass,
has developed into Europe’s most sought-after Brazil and Latin jazz bassist, with an international reputation. Already played several gigs with the “New York Salsa All Stars Band”, with Julio Barreto and David Valentin.
Eduardo Costa, percussion,
has built a reputation since 1996 as the drummer in Rodrigo Botter Maio’s band. His funky phrasing of Brazilian rhythms sets every foot tapping, recalling Steve Gadd, the great percussionist of the 70s and 80s.
Floriano Ignacio, piano,
studying jazz at Lucerne music conservatory. A busy young talent, his musical range initially extended from samba to Brazil jazz. Today, he plays with the best. Dudu says, “They’ll soon be talking about Floriano in the same breath as Tania Maria.”
Victor Wanderley, saxophone and band management,
completed his masters degree at Zurich’s jazz academy in 1998 with his own Brazil Jazz project. Since then he’s headed various Brazil Jazz groups, including “Victor’s Brazilian Affair” with Jenny Chi and “Batida Brasileira” with Simone Santos, taking him to a number of leading festivals (including Blue Balls Festival, Stanser Musiktage, Jazztage Konstanz). He was also lead saxophonist on numerous ETH Big Band European tours.
